Various drugs are used for heartburn treatment  such as Histamine Receptor Antagonists or H2 blockers are the medicines that reduce the acid contents in stomach by blocking H2 receptors. These drugs are used to treat GERD, esophagitis as well as peptic ulcers. The prescription H2 receptor blocking agents include Famotidine, Ranitidine, Cimetidine, and Nizatidine. Non prescription forms of these drugs are also available. Second category includes PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors). These drugs also inhibit the production of stomach acid, but at different phase, compared to H2 receptor antagonists. The onset of action of H2 blockers is within an hour and duration is only for 12 hours. PPIs have delayed onset of action but it lasts for 24 hours. Antacids relief heartburn by the process of neutralization. Surgical procedures for GERD include Fundoplication and Radiofrequency treatment.
